RR Auction Concludes Successful Summer Auction

RR Auction wrapped up another successful summer auction this July with the conclusion of “Fine Autographs and Memorabilia.” A wide array of artifacts, documents and autographs were available, spanning from early American history to the space age to modern events. Happy collectors and enthusiasts will be finishing off this week knowing that they’ve added another fine item to their collection.

Let’s take a look at some of the artifacts that received the highest and most astonishing bids:
·         A large sample containment bag carried and flown on Apollo 15, containing traces of lunar dust on the inside due to equipment, surpassed 50,000 with its final bid. The wear from use on this item actually made it more valuable in the end --- how many people can say they own something covered with moon dust? With a certified statement from astronaut Dave Scott, this artifact is a fascinating addition for a space age collection.

·         A letter penned and signed by Founding Father Thomas Jefferson declining the invitation to publish the private letters of his deceased friend Benjamin Rush sold at auction for more than $33,000. This valuable and authentic letter was written from Jefferson’s famous Monticello estate and was professionally restored.

·         A Revolutionary War era letter written and signed by Benjamin Franklin surpassed $30,000 this summer, the purchase coming with the letter mounted and framed with a portrait of the Founding Father.

·         A rare Apollo 15 topographical lunar map carried, used for navigation on the lunar rover while traveling on the moon’s surface and with various lunar sites labeled, sold at auction for more than $27,000. This item also comes with a certifying letter from Commander Dave Scott.
·         A first United Kingdom pressing of the The Beatle’s debut EP Twist and Shout, signed by all four members, sold at auction for more than $20,000.

·         A letter written and signed by Declaration of Independence signer John Hancock sold at auction for more than $16,500.

·         A letter from Paul McCartney to Prince, beginning “Dear Princely person,” sold at auction for more than 13,000. This is noteworthy, as this letter had an initial estimated value of $4,000+. Perhaps the final bid exceeded the initial estimate because of the recent untimely passing of the pop star Prince. Hundreds more auction results from this July auction can be previewed online at RR Auction’s website.
