RR Auction Features Rare Olympics Memorabilia This July

RR Auction recently opened an online auction featuring a number of lots involving famous comic art and original Disney production cels and concept art. But what else is coming up this summer at the globally recognized Boston-based auction house?

Opening on July 14th at RR Auction is an online “Olympics Memorabilia” auction that includes items covering over a century of Olympics history. From the Athens games in 1896 to the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, this auction contains a breathtaking number of artifacts and memorabilia for collectors that can be previewed in RR Auction’s beautifully arranged virtual catalog.

The oldest item at this auction actually stretches further back in time than a century. Alongside the artifacts from the modern Olympics is an Ancient Greek silver coin, evaluated to be from circa 325-250 BC. Worn around the edges from centuries of existence, the coin is 22 millimeters in size and originates from the city of Selge, Pisidia. One side features two muscular wrestlers grappling, and the other depicts a slinger with arms poised in the air. The coin is estimated to auction for $200+.
The oldest item from the modern Olympics era is from the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens. The bronze participation medal is 50 millimeters in size and weighs 58 grams, featuring on the front an image of Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory, holding a laurel wreath above an emerging phoenix over an Acropolis backdrop. On the other side is a star placed inside a laurel wreath with five lines of Greek text. This medal is estimated to auction for $800+.

The most valuable artifact at RR Auction in this Olympics feature is expected to auction for an estimated $75,000+: the silver-colored brass and steel alloy official torch from the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo. The torch was designed by Geir Grung and Adolf Thoresen and has the iconic Olympic rings logo engraved on the top. Carried by Ragnar Navelsaker on February 13th, 1952, this torch is especially desirable as the torchbearer’s name and participation dates are often unknown from the early relays.

Other excitingly rare and valuable items at this auction include:

·         A gold winner’s medal from the 1908 London Summer Olympics ($15,000+).
·         A bronze winner’s medal from the 1980 Lack Placid Winter Olympics ($10,000+).
·         A gold winner’s medal from 2012 London Summer Olympics ($30,000+).
·         The Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics Torch and Mother Flame Lamp ($50,000+).

All of the memorabilia for auction this July can be previewed in the virtual catalogs at RR Auction’s website. RR Auction Features More from “The Godfather” Film Creation

Attics are often a place of discovery for interesting artifacts, but it’s truly exciting when the items found are valuable relics of famous Hollywood films. Once again, Boston-based RR Auction is proving that it is the go-to place for such finds.

The brain behind “The Godfather” Mario Puzo had a 45-box archive from his estate successfully auctioned for $625,000 at RR Auction earlier this year. But that wasn’t the end of it. Currently, two original film reels of “The Godfather” are up for auction at RR Auction’s website. They were stumbled upon in the attic of a house once owned by Puzo by the current owner.

Page Six reports that the footage on the reels is from the first 40 minutes of the 1972 film adapted from Puzo’s book. After the filming was finished, the reels were given to the scribe.

“The Godfather,” directed by Francis Ford Coppola, stars Marlon Brando and Al Pacino in the most popular American crime film of the century. The movie the Oscars for Best Picture in 1972, as well as Best Actor to Brando and Best Adapted Screenplay to Puzo and Coppola.

A number of other impressive items from the classic film are available for bids until June 23rd in the themed auction “Pop Culture” at RR Auction’s website. These items include:

·         Original behind-the-scenes “Godfather” footage on 8mm film. The content is about 90 minutes long and contains insights into the production of the set designs, candid moments between the crew, and on-set routines between the actors. This never-before-seen footage is estimated to auction for $15,000+.
·         A collection of 16 blueprints on drafting paper concerning the construction of the set pieces for the Corleone Mall from the film, created by production designer Dean Tavoularis. They are estimated to auction for $1000+.
·         A pair of black cardboard cue cards used during the filming. Written on them is a dialogue between Michael Corleone and Don Vito Corleone from the scene where the father offers his son the family business. They are estimated to auction for $3000+.

All the lots and their existing bids can be viewed at RR Auction’s website. The auction concludes on June 23rd.

Authentic JFK Love Letter at RR Auction This June

Decades after his tragic assassination, President John F. Kennedy’s personal affairs still fascinate the American public. This comes to light again with the auction of a four-page love letter written by John F. Kennedy to his mistress, evaluated for authenticity and believed to be addressed to American painter Mary Meyer.

The love letter, the official White House letterhead removed but with the presidential seal still visible on the stationary, is to be sold at RR Auction’s “Pop Culture” online auction beginning on June 16th and closing on June 23rd. The estimated price of the auction of the rare letter is $30,000.

The president’s love and desire for his mistress Mary Meyer is evident in the letter. The contents include him imploring Meyer to meet with him, writing, “Why don’t you leave suburbia for once --- come and see me --- either here --- or at the Cape next week or in Boston the 19th?” After declaring that after all their years together he wants a more loving answer, he asks, “Why don’t you just say yes?” The personal contents of this historic letter give detail into the life of one of the most famous American presidents.

The contents of the document to be sold at auction are even more poignant yet, considering the letter was written a month before Kennedy’s death and never sent. Mary Meyer also died in an unsolved homicide in 1968.
